PPM Basics

What Is PPM?

A practical explanation of parts per million, how PPM is used, and when it is the right concentration unit.

What PPM means

PPM means parts per million. It describes how many parts of one substance are present for every one million parts of the total mixture.

The unit is useful when a concentration is too small to express comfortably as a percent. For example, 1 PPM is the same ratio as 0.0001 percent.

Where PPM is used

PPM appears in water testing, laboratory solution preparation, hydroponic nutrient management, air-quality monitoring, agriculture, and industrial quality control.

The exact meaning depends on the context. In dilute water, PPM is commonly treated as mg/L. In gases, PPM is usually a volume ratio and depends on molar mass when converted to mg/m³.

  • Water contaminant levels
  • Nutrient strength
  • Gas concentration
  • Defect rates in manufacturing

Why context matters

PPM is a ratio, not a full explanation by itself. Good calculations must show the units, formula, assumptions, and reference context.

That is why the calculator pages on this site include formula cards, unit notes, worked examples, and related calculators instead of only returning a number.

Frequently asked questions

Is PPM the same as mg/L?

For dilute water-based solutions, PPM and mg/L are often approximately equal. For other liquids or gases, density or molar mass can matter.

Is PPM bigger than PPB?

Yes. One PPM equals 1,000 PPB.
